Is Blockbuster Video coming to the PSN?

I’m hoping to hear some sort of announcement during E3 about Sony partnering with Blockbuster video. I know this was rumored awhile ago, but the other day (May 20) something happened that has led me to believe we will here something about this real soon.

I currently have a Blockbuster.com account with the following subscription details:
BLOCKBUSTER Total Access Premium
$11.99 / month (plus taxes)
1 at-a-time, Unlimited mailings
Unlimited in-store movie exchanges
+ 1 FREE bonus Movie or Game Rental E-Coupon / Month

However, this is after a change was made by Blockbuster to their current plans. Before the change I would get a movie in the Mail, If I returned the movie to a blockbuster store I would get a free rental. I would then get a new movie from my queue shortly there after in the mail. And on top of that it was only $10.99. With the recent change however, I no longer get a movie from my queue if I “exchange” my return in a store. What happens now is that the movie I get is considered my next rental and nothing is shipped to me.

This is what led to call to customer support. I exchanged a movie in the store for Slum Dog Millionaire (which I still haven’t watched yet) A few weeks had gone by without me having a chance to watch it. However, I was wondering why I hadn’t received a new rental in the mail. Upon learning that I was getting less and paying more, I commented that it might be cheaper for me cancel my plan and just download rentals when I felt like watching a movie. The customer support rep then said well I see you have as a preference to receive movies in a blu-ray format. And then asked if it was a PS3 I used as a player. When I told her it was, she said “Well this hasn’t been released yet but we will be offering a plan soon that would include a free movie or game rental per month on the PlayStation.” That response caught me by surprise to which I didn’t say much other than “really?”

I decided to keep my plan (for now), and I was credited back 11.99 as a courtesy because I wasn’t informed of the plan change. I then did a bit of research which as led to a few more questions than answers. Of note however, are the following: Blockbuster’s movie download/rental policy which can be seen here http://www.blockbuster.com/download/howItWorks is very similar to that of the PSN. The function of the MediaPoint Digital Media Player seen here http://www.blockbuster.com/download/ondemand and here http://www.2wire.com/?p=441 seems like it can easily be replaced with the PS3/PSN. I also found this CNet article from January of this year. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10142375-93.html

Weekend Update

I got my Platinum trophy for Eat Lead. (It took longer than I thought it would) I’ve started inFamous. It better than I thought it is was going to be. (And I thought it was going to be good :-) ) I’m about 54% done with the neon district. In other news E3 is upon us. Tomorrow is Microsoft’s Press conference. What I’m really looking forward to is info from Sony. I want to hear more about the PSP go which was leaked yesterday, (I’m hoping there is someway to trade or convert current UMDs to digital format. I won’t hold my breath though.) God of War 3 and Uncharted 2. Of course I’m also curious as to what secrets the big 3 have still yet to reveal. We will find out real soon! Ok, I’m off. (I’m taking the kids to see Up!)

E3 at Home

For the bulk of us who are unable to attend E3, we can at least watch the SCEA E3 2009 press conference from within Home. I’m not sure if it’s live or not. Some sites are claiming it will be. Source: thesixthaxis.com
